The Division II Central District tennis tournament will take place this week and Madison County will be represented.
Jonathan Alder senior Mikayla Holland will be participating in the event which will be held at Columbus School for Girls (CGS) Thursday, Oct. 12 and Upper Arlington High School Saturday, Oct. 14.
Holland earned her district tournament spot by placing second at the D-II sectional held at Columbus School for Girls. She had a first-round bye and then topped Imani Babatunde of CSG 6-2, 6-4. She then eliminated Bishop Hartley freshman Gia Green 6-1, 6-1.
Her semifinal match with Wellington’s Isabella Vegas was a three-set affair which Holland pulled out 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. Holland’s championship singles match was against Wellington’s Akua Antwi-Woods which she dropped 6-0, 6-1.
Holland, the only district qualifier from a public school, will face Columbus Academy freshman Lauren Motta Thursday, at 9 a.m. The district champion will advance to the D-II state tournament.
Alder’s Sydney Winslow won a pair of matches at the sectional but was knocked out by Vegas in the quarterfinal.
In doubles action, the Pioneers pair of Mary Kate Hipp and Paula Berge won a match over a team from Pleasant before losing to a pair from Wellington. The combo of Abagail Watkins and Eliza Watkins was upended in its opener by a team from CSG.
Sectional at Columbus Academy
The London Red Raiders competed at the D-II sectional at Columbus Academy last weekend.
Senior Rachel Herman dropped her opening match to Emily Mathew of Bishop Ready and Emma Hatem came up short against Olivia Williams of Bexley.
In doubles action, the Raiders team of Kate Eisler and Cassie Anders won their first match 6-2, 6-0 over a Fisher Catholic team, but fell in the second to a team from Columbus Academy. The team of Breanna Blackburn and Meredith Hochstetler fell in its opening match.
