WJ boys open with 2-1 win

The fall high school sports season started a couple weeks ago with golf teams teeing off. The rest of the sports got into the swing of things officially this past weekend and football will take center stage Friday night.

The Roughriders (1-0) opened the season with a 2-1 win over defending Central Buckeye Conference champion Saturday, Aug. 19.

In West Jeff’s road win over the Panthers, senior Thomas Farbacher scored the teams first goal and fellow senior Connor Shields netted what turned out to be the winning tally. In goal for the ’Riders was Reese Nawman who turned away three Fairbanks shots.

“It’s a good start to the season for us,” West Jeff coach Richard Tompkins said.

The Pioneers (0-1) opened their season at home in a “Friday Night Futbol” contest, but they were unable to keep up with a talented bunch of Watterson Eagles Friday.

The Lady Roughriders fell in its season opener at Fairbanks Saturday.


Alder wins two of three

The Lady Pioneers opened their season by winning two out of three matches Saturday at the Marysville Spikefest.

Alder dropped a 25-15, 25-20 decision to Pickerington North. In that match Corinne Parker had a team high nine kills. Sara Dickey had 19 gigs and Sam Durbins and Abby Jester has seven assists each.

The Lady Pioneers bounced back to defeat New Albany 25-21, 25-22 with Parker and Cassie Blank collecting five kills apiece. Dickey had 13 digs and Jester dished out 13 assists.

In the match with the host Monarchs, Alder cruised 25-10, 25-10. Parker (nine kills), Dickey (six digs) and Durbins (11 assists) again led the way.
