LMS splits with Buckeye Valley

Seventh Grade

The London Seventh Grade football team lost its home opener to visiting Buckeye Valley Thursday evening 12-8 in a game played at vonKanel Field.

The Raiders scored on their first possession in the first quarter on a 27-yard pass from Trey Woodyard to Zack McWhinney. Logan Minner rushed for the two-point conversion and the home team led 8-0. The Barons closed to within 8-6 when they scored with 1:27 left in the first half.

Buckeye Valley got what proved to be the winning score on a 39-yard run at the 3:19 mark of the third quarter.

The Red Raiders had one final chance, but as Woodyard’s pass fell incomplete in the end zone as the game clock expired.

Woodyard led the Raiders with five completions for 44 yards and the TD. McWhinney caught four balls for 35 yards with the TD. Woodyard was the leading rusher with 60 yards. Logan Minner had an outstanding game on defense with 11 tackles, while Ethan Minner chipped in with five tackles of his own.

The Seventh Grade’s next contest is on Sept. 10 date with Mechanicsburg starting at 6:30 p.m.

Eighth Grade

The Red Raider Eighth Grade team opened their season with a 14-0 win over the visiting Buckeye Valley Barons Thursday evening.

After a scoreless first quarter, Juane Gardner got the season started off right by intercepting a Baron pass and returning it 30 yards for an opening touchdown. The extra point was missed and the Red led 6-0 at the 3:13 mark of the second quarter.

Later in the quarter Jayvion Stevens hit Isaiah Hatem with a 24-yard scoring strike and a Stevens to Hatem two-point try made it a 14-0 halftime lead. The Big Red defense held the Barons in check the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Stevens led the offense with 65-yards passing and Hatem had two catches for 45 yards. Gardner and Tristan Meddock led the defense with four tackles each. The Raiders defense had three takeaways and held the Barons to a mere 26 yards on 25 carries for the day.

The Eighth Grade’s next game is Sept. 8 at home against Columbus Academy, starting at 5 p.m.
