Smith to serve as interim pastor at First Baptist

The First Baptist Church in West Jefferson has announced its interim pastor.

Rev. Mark Smith will begin serving in the position on Sunday, June 28, at the church’s 10:45 a.m. service.

The church is located at 686 West Jefferson-Kiousville Road, West Jefferson..

Rev. Smith is 56 years old and is coming from First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi where he served as senior pastor since 2013.

He has been married to the former Toni Heading for 36 years and they have two grown sons, both in the ministry.

He was saved at the age of seven at the Southside Baptist in Columbus. He served as minister of music and Evangelism at Highland Baptist Church in Grove City from 1983-1989.

He received his undergraduate degree in music from Ohio State University in 1987.

He served as minister of music and education at the Teamon Baptist Church in Griffin, Georgia from 1989-1991, at the Crestview Baptist Church in Clayton, Ohio from 1991-1994, and the Whitehall Baptist Church from 1994-1998.

He received a master’s degree in Christian education from Ashland Theological Seminary in 1998. He then served as senior pastor at the First Baptist Church in Aurora, Ohio from 1998-2002.

From 2002-2005 he was assistant pastor at the Brookwood Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia and from 2005-2013 was senior pastor at the Murdock Baptist Church in Port Charlotte, Florida, where attendance rose from 140 to 1,000.
