Track announcer Denver Geitgey expressed optimism at the start of the Danny Toops Memorial Truck Pull that the rain would be held off.
“Danny’s watching over us,” Geitgey said.
Despite the declaration of the announcer, rain did come and washed out four of the seven events scheduled for Saturday evening’s action at the Madison County Fairgrounds.
The event honors the late Danny Toops. Toops was a skilled diesel engine technician with a growing reputation before he lost his life in an automobile accident in November 2013.
Dan Toops, father of Danny Toops, said from his vantage point the meet — now a regular event on the Central Ohio Pulling Circuit — “would have been about as big as last year.”
A downpour drowned the hopes of that. The remainder of the pull will be held at the Sept. 26 meet.
Toops was impressed with the turnout for the Friday evening dirt drags. He reported approximately 1,050 spectators watched the action. It included 120 trucks and a combination of 50 motorcycles and ATVs racing on the dirt.
Bridget Shoemaker, who registers contestants, said the field of entries could have equaled last year’s event. But again rain ran off any would be late-comers.
