Jefferson prepares for school year

Jefferson Local Schools are preparing for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year with some changes.

Classes will start on Monday, Aug. 21.

Superintendent William Mullett is looking forward to focusing on the “culture” of the school. He also is excited to adapt to the new changes that each school year brings.

New administration

This year, West Jefferson High School welcomes new principal Michael Bute. As previously reported, Bute has spent the past six years as principal for Antwerp middle and high school in Paulding County. Mullett is excited for Bute’s expertise in the use of data for the new school year.

This year, there are no new teachers at Jefferson. For Mullett, he explains that this is the “first time ever happening” and suspects the reasoning being “timing;” there are no teachers retiring who would need their position filled.

Mullett also explained that they have hired a social worker for the city school, as well. This will help on response to “social issues that kids and families are experiencing.”

Bus routes

There will be a few changes in the bus route system this year for Jefferson schools. Mullett hopes that these adjustments will help make the system more efficient.

The new bus routes may “not be welcomed by some,” said Mullett, because it may lead to some children having to walk farther to the bus stop. There will be seven bus routes this year.

Mullet said that he is expecting enrollment for this year to be “about the same” as last year.

Jefferson has now closed open enrollment for this upcoming school year.

Mullett also said, “We are anticipating a growth in the future” for Jefferson’s enrollment.

There are no new expenses that Mullett is expecting for this year, other than what they have already budgeted for in upgrading the physical plant. He has also budgeted to allow the individual Chromebooks for students for the second year in a row.
