Kamal Singh, owner of the BP gas station/convenience store on High Street in London, touts he’s selling the cheapest regular gas in the country.

Yes, that’s country with an “r,” not just in the county, as in Madison.

With the sign advertising the price for regular gas at $1.89 per gallon, Singh’s assertion may be true.

He said the reason for the lower price was “competition, gas war.”

The competition was in full force Friday afternoon. The Speedway gas station, located just down the road, matched the price.

Checking the fuel gauge report online, it lists Ohio gas prices per gallon at $2.52. The best price seen on that chart was $2.35 per gallon in South Carolina.

Singh’s price clearly has those beat and his customers are happy. The parking lot was swarming with paying customers throughout the day.

“People are coming from Columbus and Springfield,” he said. “You can’t beat it.”

Bill Ervin of London took delight in filling the tank of his Infiniti sedan.

“It’s about time things are going our way,” he said. “This is great.”

He couldn’t resist reminiscing about gas of his youth: 35 cents a gallon.

Junior Liff drove up from Mount Sterling to not only fill the tank of his Ford F-150 pick up, but also three gas containers. He said his wife, Bonnie, will be making the 16-mile trip to fill her car later in the day.

Joe Knapke of London called the price “pleasant” and it came at the right time.

“I needed gas,” he said for his Pontiac G6. To fill it with 11.2 gallons, the pump rang up $21 even.

Pleasant indeed.

Christina Speakman of London was shopping across the street at the London One-Stop when she noticed the sign on Singh’s station and drove across the street to fill the tank of her Toyota Sienna minivan. With five children she needs a minivan which she described as “awful” on gas. So the discount was welcome.

Cheryl Webb heeded the call from her son, who told her the price at Singh’s BP station.

“It’s phenomenal,” She said. “We don’t see it too often.”

Throughout the day, other gas stations such as the Kroger and Shell stations followed suit and lowered prices.
