A Columbus woman who is accused of causing a collision on Interstate 70 in Madison County that killed a woman in March was arraigned in Madison County Common Pleas Court Monday.
Mattison Skoog, 24, is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of aggravated vehicular assault and one count of vehicular assault. She was initially arraigned in March in Madison County Municipal Court.
Because the case has transferred to the common pleas court, she was arraigned there as well Monday.
Skoog could face up to 13 years in prison for the offense. She was placed on a $500,000 bond in March, which she posted. Her bond was continued at Monday’s arraignment.
She is represented by attorneys Samuel Weiner and Dustin Blake, of Columbus.
Skoog was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 in a 2013 Nissan Rogue early on the morning of March 24 when she collided head-on with a 1999 Plymouth Breeze minivan traveling eastbound near the State Route 29 exit in Madison County about 1:52 a.m., according to the West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The minivan overturned and came to rest in the median as a result of the impact. Skoog’s vehicle traveled off the south side of the road, where it came to rest.
Maribel Pablo Mijangos, 32, of Columbus, died from injuries sustained in the crash. She was riding in the back seat.
Carlos De-La Furnta (the driver), 31, Marta Pablo Mijango, 34, and three children — ages 2, 3, and 7 — were transported to local hospitals. They all sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators say Skoog’s blood alcohol level was 0.19, more than twice the legal limit.
ODOT traffic cameras captured Skoog driving in the wrong direction for about 15 miles. Several other drivers started calling 9-1-1 around 1:30 a.m., reporting a driver going westbound in the eastbound lanes in the area of Interstate 670 and Grandview Avenue, but officers were not able to locate the car.
Skoog’s informal pretrial hearing is currently scheduled for Aug. 19.
