Katherine Garen was looking to try something outside of her comfort zone.
Because she has never considered herself “girly” or “pageant-like,” she thought the best way to push herself would be to enter the contest for the Madison County Jr. Fair Queen.
“I wanted to meet all new people,” said Garen, a 17-year-old from West Jefferson who shows cows and goats. “I felt like this really accomplished that.”
So nobody was more surprised than she when her name was called as the winner Sunday night during the 2015 Madison County Jr. Fair contest, held at the Della Selsor building.
This week, her name is Queen Katherine Garen.
“I couldn’t believe it,” her highness said of hearing her name across the speakers. “I’m the girl that’s out on the farm. I’ve never done anything like this before.”
Garen, who first became involved in 4-H as a 5-year-old Cloverbud, grew up on a family cattle farm. She is a camp counselor and Jr. Fair Board member.
At West Jefferson High School, where she will be a senior this fall, she’s on the National Honor Society and student council, and plays volleyball and basketball for the Roughriders.
After the initial shock wore off, Garen said she began thinking of everything she wants to accomplish during this year’s reign.
Her largest goal is to create a scholarship fund for 4-Hers who cannot afford camp. The fund would be supported by other 4-Hers with money from their sales. Camp is her passion, she said.
But this week, she’s keeping it simple.
“I’m looking forward to just being the queen, watching the tractor pulls and hanging out with my friends,” she said.
