TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Four employees of the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office have been disciplined after they failed for several hours to check on an inmate who ended up dead in his cell.
The Blade newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/2a6TJ1d ) two sergeants and two corrections officers were disciplined following an internal affairs review of the May 14 death of 34-year-old Alfred Estis.
Officials say corrections officer Adia Washington received the stiffest penalty, a 65-day unpaid suspension.
The investigation found that the two sergeants did not enter the cells or fully check them during their security rounds.
Estis had been in jail since March 20 awaiting trial on charges of rape, abduction and felonious assault. Police say it appeared he died of natural causes.
An autopsy report is pending.
