Illinois airport evacuated due to suspicious bag

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say an Illinois airport was evacuated for about three hours after a passenger had a bag that appeared to contain tubes of explosive material, though security officials determined it wasn’t a bomb.

Peoria International Airport Director Gene Olson says the airport was evacuated just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday and reopened about 9:30 a.m.

Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy tells the (Peoria) Journal Star that his office and the FBI are questioning the woman who had the baggage. McCoy said the woman was on a flight to Dallas.

The sheriff says the bag appeared to contain the tubes of explosive material, a timing device and vials of liquid. Olson says security officials determined it wasn’t an explosive device.

Olson says about a half-dozen flights were affected.
