Tranquil start to last trading day of stormy quarter

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks opened nearly flat, a tranquil start to the last trading day of a stormy quarter.

Slight early gains Thursday added to a strong March that wiped away steep losses from the start of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index are on track to finish up 1.3 percent for year’s first three months. They had been down more than 10 percent in mid-February.

The Dow was up 25 points Thursday to 17,742 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The S&P was up less than a point to 2,064. The Nasdaq composite was up less than a point to 4,870. The Nasdaq remains down 3 percent for 2016.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.81 percent.
