US stocks move higher, building on gains from a day earlier


NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are moving higher on Wall Street, building on gains from the day before.

Several companies were moving on earnings news Wednesday.

Cruise operator Carnival jumped 4 percent after reporting results that were better than analysts were expecting. Restaurant chain operator Sonic also rose after posting good results.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 87 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,721 as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained nine points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,064. The Nasdaq composite increased 19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,866.

European markets also rose.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.84 percent.
