US stocks open higher, building on gains from day earlier


NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening slightly higher on Wall Street, building on gains from the day before.

Several companies were moving on earnings news early Wednesday.

Cruise operator Carnival jumped 5 percent after reporting results that were better than analysts were expecting. Restaurant chain operator Sonic also rose sharply after posting good results.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 111 points, or 0.6 percent, to 17,546 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 12 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,067. The Nasdaq composite increased 36 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,882.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.83 percent.
