Greenville sheriff’s deputies shoot and kill man with rifle

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say two South Carolina sheriff’s deputies have shot and killed a man who pointed a rifle at them.

Greenville County Sheriff’s Maj. Brad Stepp said in a statement that deputies were called around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and found a man in the front yard of a home who was acting erratically.

Stepp said the man ran inside and came back with a rifle. Stepp said the man refused to drop the gun. Stepp said officers fired when the man pointed the rifle at them.

The man died at the scene. No one else was hurt.

The names of those involved haven’t been released.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. SLED spokesman Thom Berry said he’s been told the man who was shot was white, as are the deputies involved.
