Fire officials: 1 dead in ammonia leak at seafood warehouse

BOSTON (AP) — Fire officials say one person has died after ammonia leaked from a seafood warehouse in the Seaport District in south Boston.

The Boston Fire Department says on Twitter that one man died in Massachusetts State Police described as a “large-scale ammonia spill.”

Media outlets reported the man was working at Stavis Seafoods Warehouse, when the leak occurred near the end of a work shift about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A hazmat team wearing protective suits worked to shut off a main valve.

Several nearby streets were closed off, and police asked all businesses and residents to shelter in place or stay away from the area.

Fire officials say the medical examiner will determine what caused the man’s death.

A fire department spokesman did not immediately return a message for further details.
