Former Georgian Cabinet minister shot in both legs

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — A former Cabinet minister in the republic of Georgia has been shot in an attack while visiting a cemetery.

Georgian police said Alexei Petriashvili was attacked Friday morning by men who insulted him and then shot him in both legs. Officials of his “Free Democrat” party said he was undergoing an operation but his life was not in danger.

There were no immediate arrests reported and no clear motive was suggested. Georgian politics are highly contentious with frequently shifting loyalties among factions.

Petriashvili was minister for European integration until he resigned in late 2014 to protest the removal of his colleague Irakli Alasania as defense minister.
