The Internal Revenue Service has granted tax-exempt status to one of the best-known and best-funded politically active nonprofit organizations, Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies.
Crossroads GPS was founded in 2010 by Republican strategist Karl Rove, and its tax status has been in limbo ever since. The IRS made its decision in November but only recently updated its exempt-organizations database.
The nonprofit and a companion super political action committee spent $175 million on the 2012 presidential race and other contests, and the Crossroads organization is expected to be a major player again in 2016.
Crossroads GPS has drawn scrutiny because nonprofits do not have to disclose their donors to the public, and it is one of the most active in politics. Groups may act as tax-exempt while they await the IRS’s determination.
