Sheriff: Man fatally shot by deputies after car chase


NEW ORLEANS (AP) — One man has died and a woman has been injured after a car chase ended with a deputies opening fire in New Orleans.

WDSU-TV (http://bit.ly/1QS7yP2 ) reports the incident began Monday night at Oakwood Mall after three people reported that an unidentified man had brandished a gun toward them.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says a security officer approached the man and an altercation ensued. The man then fled the mall in a car with deputies in pursuit.

After losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a pole, Normand says the man put his car in reverse and the deputies opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman who was in the car was taken to the hospital. Investigators believe she was not shot.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
