Object thrown at NYPD patrol car, bomb squad called

NEW YORK (AP) — Police are in standoff at Columbus Circle with a man believed to have thrown a suspicious device into a police car.

The New York Post reports that a man in a gold SUV flung the device into a marked police car in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday night. Authorities told the newspaper that it landed on the dashboard at around 11:30 p.m. near 46th Street and Sixth Avenue. The officers placed the device on the sidewalk, exited the vehicle and took cover.

Streets in the area were shut down as police investigated.

The New York Police Department bomb squad gave the all-clear a short time later.

Police say the device appears to be a flashlight and candle wrapped in tin foil.

Hours later police got into a standoff with the man believed to be the suspect.

Dozens of officers with guns drawn were surrounding the car as of 4 a.m. But the driver, who was also wearing some kind of body armor, has refused to get out.
