ATHENS, Greece (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew is meeting with Greece’s finance minister during a visit to discuss the country’s progress in meeting reforms required under its third international bailout.
Lew was meeting with Euclid Tsakalotos in Athens on Thursday. He was also to hold talks with other officials, including Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, before heading to China for a meeting of G-20 finance ministers and central bank governors.
Discussions with Tsakalotos were to focus on the Greek government’s progress on reforms, including in sectors of labor, pension and social security reforms, tax hikes and privatizations.
Greece has been dependent on bailouts since 2010, after massive debt and a loss of investor confidence in the country’s ability to repay it left it locked out of bond markets.
