HOUSTON (AP) — Houston’s mayor says he plans to release video footage from a police shooting in which city officers killed a black man earlier this month.
Mayor Sylvester Turner says it is part of efforts to preserve community safety in the wake of recent shootings of police officers in Dallas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and other cities.
Turner says given the country’s tense atmosphere, he wants to dispute claims on social media that 38-year-old Alva Braziel didn’t have a gun when he was fatally shot.
The mayor was going to release body camera footage and surveillance video Wednesday but now plans to do so on Thursday. He wanted to give Braziel’s family a chance to see the footage first.
An attorney for Braziel’s family didn’t immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.
