MAYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on a Los Angeles-area warehouse fire that prompted evacuations (all times local):
Some of the estimated 300 people forced from their homes by an explosive warehouse fire near Los Angeles have been allowed to return but others may have to wait until Saturday.
Los Angeles county sheriff’s officials tell City News Service about half of those evacuated during Tuesday’s blaze in Maywood are back.
Fire inspector Gustavo Medina says they were allowed back Wednesday evening. But he says people living in homes that backed up against the warehouse can’t return until testing ensures there’s no health risk from ash and dust produced by the blaze.
Medina says tests for lead, magnesium and other metals are underway Thursday.
The fire destroyed two commercial buildings, including a metal-recycling plant containing 10,000 pounds of magnesium shavings.
