Tour bus overturns near Mount Vernon estate, 1 killed

MOUNT VERNON, Va. (AP) — Police say a tour bus overturned near George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, leaving one person dead and 19 injured.

U.S. Park Police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose said Tuesday afternoon that three of those hurt suffered critical injuries.

Policed closed sections of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, which runs along the Potomac River between the nation’s capital and Mount Vernon.

Roughly a million tourists a year visit Mount Vernon, and rows of tour buses pulled over on the highway in front of the estate are a common scene.

Fairfax County Police said they were assisting Park Police and directing families of the injured to the Mount Vernon police station on Parkers Lane.
