The West Jefferson High School football team jumped out to a huge first quarter lead and cruised to an easy 45-0 non-league victory Friday, Sept. 1 at Frankfort Adena.
The Roughriders (2-0) were dominant in every aspect of the game and have them feeling good about themselves heading into a Week 3 home date with Greenon (1-0) Friday, Sept. 8 at West Jefferson.
In the win at Adena, West Jefferson scored 23-first quarter points and never looked back.
Jon Stevenson connected on a 30-yard field goal to start the game, then the Roughriders started the touchdown binge over the next six minutes.
Ethan Higgins scored on a 5-yard run with 4:28 to play in the first quarter. Lance Lambert then scored on a 48-yard run with 2:26 to go, PATs by Stevenson made it 17-0. Lambert then hooked up with Caleb Vanhook on a 63-yard scoring play with :55 to go in the opening quarter, a failed 2-point try made it 23-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Lambert continued to torch the Adena defense, finding Jacob Boyd on a 39-yard pass play in the second quarter and giving West Jeff a 30-0 halftime lead.
The ′Riders closed out the scoring in the second half with a 45-yard interception return for a score and Gavin Frybarger rushed in on a 46-yard scoring run. The West Jeff tacked on a safety to make the final score 45-0.
The West Jefferson defense was as strong as it could possibly be allowing a mere 42 yards in the game (37 rushing, 5 passing). The Roughriders also forced four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble).
Lambert was 4 for 6 for 117 yards passing and with two touchdowns. He also lead the team with 85 yards rushing. Frybarger rushed for 76 yards while Wyatt Dillion finished with 36 yards on the ground.
