Another tournament, another championship. That’s how things are going these days for the Jonathan Alder High School girls bowling team.

The Lady Pioneers captured their second Baker tournament title of the year defeating Springfield 2-0 Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Holiday Baker Tournament held at TP Lanes in Bellefontaine.

The girls qualified fourth in the 10-game qualifying round, defeated No. 5 seed Sidney in the quarterfinal (2-1), defeated top-seeded Vandalia Butler (2-1) in the semifinals and swept Springfield (2-0) in the championship match 201-173 and 161-161 (roll-off victory).

Junior Mackenzie Heimlich won the roll off (40-39), for the Lady Pioneers to capture the team title.

“It was a super-great team effort today by all seven team members. All of them bowled well today and contributed in the qualifying rounds,” excited Alder coach Rusty Walter said.

The team’s lineup in the championship final included Rachel Kaeser, Rena Kirts, Trisha Fox, Kaylee Griest and Heimlich.

“Everyone of them threw key strikes and converted a high spare percentage today,” the coach said.

The Pioneer boys team finished fifth in the tournament advancing to the quarterfinal round where it was defeated by eventual tournament champion Vandalia Butler (2-1).

“Overall the boys bowled well,” Walter said. “We haven’t seen the whole team since before the break and a couple of them struggled on the wood lanes and the surface friction. With a week before our match and tournament schedule picks up we are going to be working on our spare game and adjusting to the lane conditions.

“The boys team is really just starting to come together, we are still searching for that key Baker lineup and building up that team confidence.”

Both Alder teams will travel to HP Lanes in Columbus on Saturday, Jan. 9, for the Ohio State Buckeye High School Classic Tournament. The tournament field will include some of Ohio’s best teams from both Division I and Division II schools. There will be a stiff top four team cut to advance to the finals, with teams bowling three regular games and six Baker games.
