Seggerson is new boys hoops coach at WJ

A fresh new face will be leading the West Jefferson High School boys basketball team this upcoming winter.

Sam Seggerson, who most recently was a varsity assistant at Groveport Madison High School in Franklin County, was approved by the Jefferson Local Schools Board of Education Monday evening.

West Jefferson director of athletics Matt Adams said Seggerson brings a youthful enthusiasm to the position and will be an asset to the school’s athletic department.

“We’re real excited about this hire,” Adams said. “It’s his first job as a head coach, but he brings a lot of passion and excitement to the position.”

Seggerson is a graduate of Columbus St. Francis DeSales High School and played in college at Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio. He’s been working with the West Jefferson players for the last couple weeks and has already formed a bond with those in the school.

“For me it’s all about fit and he just seems like a great fit for our school, our community and our kids,” Adams said. “He’s a very genuine guy and I think he will do a wonderful job here.”

Seggerson is a physical education teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Grove City. He will keep that position and make the drive to West Jefferson. He fills the void left by the resignation of Stu Hartenstein after just one year at the helm.

Even though the Roughriders basketball program struggled in its one year under Hartenstein (5-18 overall, 2-12 in MSL Ohio), Adams believes all the parts are in place for the program to bounce back.

“The program has been competitive over the years and we expect that to continue,” Adams said. “Bringing in a guy with energy will help grow the program.”

New varsity

volleyball coach

The Roughriders turned to someone inside the program to fill the school’s vacant head varsity volleyball coaching position.

Jeff Mere, a longtime coach and middle school teacher in the district is the school’s new volleyball coach. Mere was a varsity assistant last year under Kristen Hershberger.

Having someone who’s worked with the current group of athletes in the program is a big plus according to the athletic director.

“He’s a West Jeff guy,” Adams said. “He knows the kids and they know him. He’s been here and will do a fine job.

“The volleyball program here has been extremely strong here at West Jeff. Kristen (Hershberger) did a great job in the seven or eight years she was here. Jeff knows the tradition we have and knows the expectations. Our kids will benefit from his experience as a coach.”

West Jefferson was 15-8 last season, and finished second in the MSL Ohio 11-3, three games behind league champion London (14-0).
