The Shekinah Christian boys basketball team needed a late comeback to sneak by Northside Christian 49-48 Saturday, Feb. 3 but the victory guaranteed the Flames at least a share of the Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League title.
The Flames (13-4, 10-0) trailed 48-43 with just 1:15 remaining in the game when senior Tucker Beachy drained a three-pointer from the corner to bring the home team to within a pair. After the Lions missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Beachy used the other corner in front of Shekinah’s bench to knock down the go-ahead three-pointer that would prove to be the game winner.
Northside had one last opportunity with the ball and 5.4 seconds remaining on the clock. James Meyer, who scored a game-high 24 points, drove the length of the court and bounced home a pull-up 18 footer with 1.2 seconds remaining that would have given the Lions the lead.
But Shekinah guard Joel Headings ran through the screen of Northside’s Joshua Peeler and was whistled for a foul just prior to the shot going up. Peeler went to the line and missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and the offensive putback by Northside was blocked as time expired, allowing Shekinah to escape with the narrow victory.
Northside’s lengthy 1-3-1 zone caused trouble for an undersized Shekinah squad. The Lions had four players over 6’-2” in their starting lineup, including a 6-7 center and 6-5, 6-4 and 6-2 wings. The Flames overcame a slow start by shooting themselves back in the game by connecting on 10 three-pointers, but turnovers and a few missed layups prevented them from making any big runs.
Shekinah was led in scoring by Austin Lynn’s 11 points, John Michael Hershberger added 10 and Beachy finished with nine.
Shekinah’s defense, offensive balance and clutch shooting helped them claim its first conference championship in just its second year of league play. The loss dropped Northside Christian to 7-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play. The Flames sit two games clear of second place Tree of Life (8-2) .
The team can clinch an outright title Thursday, Feb. 8, with a game at Madison Christian (3-7), starting at 7:30 p.m.
