Alder tops LHS at Mapfre

The Jonathan Alder and London girls soccer teams got to play where few high school teams get a chance to play, inside Mapfre Stadium, home of Columbus Crew SC.

The Pioneers and Red Raiders met each other Saturday, Sept. 9, in a non-league clash between Madison County foes.

It was Jonathan Alder (5-0-1) that was riding high following a 6-0 victory, one in which anyone who participated won’t soon forget.

“It was an amazing time and I am so glad that the girls got to enjoy that experience,” Alder coach Matt Evans said. “The field, stadium and just the whole experience was a lot different than what we have ever been a part of, so it took us a while to settle in, but once we did, we were able to play the way we want and have fun.”

The Pioneers were in control of the game from early on. London’s offensive chances were limited, and when Alder got the chances it was able to make the most of them.

Hannah Headlee and Sophia Thomas both scored a pair of goals, while Madison Ice and Emily Piccolantonio each tallied a score against the Red Raiders (0-5). London keeper Amber Wolford collected 10 saves in goal for the Raiders.

“We scored some nice goals, got everyone a lot of playing time and were able to get back to our shutout streak,” Evans said.

Alder has now outscored its opponents 51-2 on the season and have a shutout in six of its seven games. The only game it didn’t shutout the opposition was a 2-2 draw with Urbana last week.

“We had a tough game on Wednesday on the road at Urbana,” the coach said. “So it was nice to get back on track and what better way to do it than at Crew Stadium?”
