London runs past UHS; M’burg routs C’ville

London and Urbana kept the scoreboard busy in the first half of Friday night’s non-league season opener.

In the end, the Red Raiders had the edge on the ground and in special teams to pull out a 49-19 victory.

The visitors scored first on a Justin Portman 10-yard run at the 9:23 mark of the first quarter. The PAT was good and London led, 7-0.

Urbana answered when Nic Dorsey converted a third down and then scored the TD at 5:09. After the PAT, the score was tied 7-7.

The Red Raiders scored again courtesy of a penalty that extended their drive. A touchdown pass near the end of the first quarter followed by a PAT put London on top, 14-7.

Urbana answered at 7:47 of the second quarter when quarterback Preston Shields connected with Dorsey for a 10-yard TD. The kick failed, and Urbana trailed, 14-13.

London then scored on a 37-yard run followed by a PAT for a 21-13 lead. Urbana answered with a Shields 3-yard run, but the kick failed. London led 21-19.

The Red Raiders got the ball back with 2 minutes to play in the first half and scored on an 80-yard run.

London led the Hillclimbers 28-19 at the half and Shields exited the game with an injury.

London owned a 35-19 lead early in the third quarter and extended it with two more touchdowns to 49-19 later in the second half – resulting in a running clock to expedite the end of the game.

Prior to the game, long-time P.A. announcer Roger Wilson and statistician John Birkhimer were inducted into the George Scott Ring of Honor.
