The first day of regional track and field proved to be for the most part pretty unforgettable for Madison County athletes competing.
But a quartet of Jonathan Alder athletes made some memories, guaranteeing there will be at least some county representatives at next weekend’s OHSAA state championship meet at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Pioneers’ 4 x 800-meter relay team finished second in a time of 9:31.70 at the D-II regional meet held at Lexington High School Wednesday, earning a spot in the state meet. The place was behind only regional champion Ontario (9:29.02). The top four placers in each event at the regional level qualify for the state.
The members of the state-qualifying relay are senior Aziza Ayoub, junior Lexi Thorpe, sophomore Maddy Killian and freshman Sydney Bourquin.
The 3,200 relay was the only running event final contested on the regionals first day. The rest of the running prelims saw London sophomore sprinter Destiny Clifton fail to make the finals in the 400-meter dash (1:02.12).
Alder freshman Donna Seminishin competed in the high jump but her height of 4-10 was a few inches of placing high enough to score points for the team.
A handful of female athletes will compete in finals events Saturday, May 27. They include London’s Kayla Martinez (1,600, pole vault) and Ayoub the defending D-II state champion in the 800.
Alder’s 1,600 relay will also run in Saturday’s final, the members include Thorpe, Ayoub, Killian and junior Emily Davis.
Other county females competing in the D-III finals Friday at Lancaster High School included West Jefferson’s Justice Holcomb (long jump) and Madison-Plains senior Addison Davison (pole vault).
Alder senior Matt Seimer gave his best effort in the long jump (19-07) but failed to reach the D-II finals, finishing in 16th place. In D-III Madison-Plains Ben Fisher cleared 11-00 in the pole vault and finished ninth.
The boys competing in finals Saturday include the Pioneers’ Jase Headings (800) in D-II. West Jeff freshman Riley Stone (high jump) and senior Ian Grossholtz (shot put) were to participate in the D-III meet Friday.
