Survive and advance.

That’s exactly what the London High School softball team did in winning a 14-12, nine inning decision over host Hamilton Township in the first round of the Division II Central District tournament Tuesday, May 9.

London High School trailed 10-8 entering the seventh inning after giving up a three-tun home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and failing to score in the sixth. But the squad was able to scratch out four runs and go up 12-10 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The host Rangers plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and forced extra innings.

“We just hung in there,” Red Raiders coach Kelly Nelson said. “We battled back, we could have easily quit when that girl hit the three-run dinger. But we kept playing.”

London’s rally in the ninth was started by a walk by Makayla Ratliff. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Alexis Clark reached on an error and Ratliff scored on the same play. Clark made her way around the bases and scored on a wild pitch.

Taylor Holloway, who went the entire way for the Raiders inside the circle, kept the Rangers off the board in the ninth winning.

“We’ve had our ups and downs this season, but records mean nothing at this time of the year,” Nelson said. “We found a way to win a game and now we get another.”

London will play host to No. 13 Bishop Hartley Thursday, May 11, starting at 5 p.m.

The two teams played earlier this season with London earning a 4-2 win.
