The Olympic Games get started this week in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, but for a slightly younger set of American athletes with Olympic aspirations. Their national championship was held last week in Sacramento, Calif. and a Jonathan Alder standout continued to impress.
Alder senior Aziza Ayoub won the 800-meter run and placed sixth in the 400-meter at the USTAF National Junior Olympics held July 25-31 at Sacramento State University. The win gave Ayoub a National Championship and both performances earned her two-time All-American honors.
Her time in the 800 Women’s 17-18 years old division was 2:11.15 and allowed her to finish more than a half second ahead of her closest competition. She posted a solid 55.93 in placing sixth in the 400.
Ayoub is the defending Division II state champion in the 800 meter. She qualified for the state in both the 100 and 800, but her sprinter skills made her unbeatable at the state and again in California. the speedster was actually faster in winning the state crown doing so in 2:09.76. Her time in the 400 would have placed her fourth in the D-II state meet.
