Football season returned in glorious fashion for the London Middle School football squads. Both teams opened the 2014 campaign with rewarding victories.
The London Middle School Seventh Grade football team traveled to Buckeye Valley on Monday, Aug. 25, and handed the host Barons a 36-6 defeat.
The Raiders offense was paced by Tristan Meddock, who rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns on only four carries. Jayvion Stevens passed for two touchdowns, both of which went to tight end Colton Cleaver. The Raiders defense held the Barons to less than 1-yard per play and did not give up a score. The only BV score came off a fumble return for a touchdown.
Cleaver also led the Red defense with seven tackles, including 2 1/2 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Xavier Manville chipped in with five tackles.
The Seventh Grade Raiders (1-0) will play Whitehall on Tuesday, Sept. 2, starting at 5 p.m. at home on vonKanel Field.
The London Middle School Eighth Grade football team edged Buckeye Valley 20-18 in their first game of the season by stopping a 2-point conversion try with less than a minute to go in the game Monday. London had built a 20-6 lead at halftime, but the Barons regrouped and scored the final two touchdowns leading up to the key extra-point stop.
Kijon Price led the Red offense with 155 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns. Bricker Thiel scored the other touchdown and Tommy Barnette bulled his way into the end zone for a critical 2-point conversion.
Brandon Leach led the defense with five tackles, including 1 1/2 tackles for loss. Price had four tackles, with two for losses, and Julian Leilous added four tackles.
The Eighth Grade Raiders (1-0) will play Whitehall on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at home immediately following the Seventh Grade game.
