Three former athletes will be inducted into the West Jefferson Athletic Hall of Fame prior to the school’s first home football game Friday, Aug. 29, against Mechanicsburg.
The members of the 2014 class are John Harbage, Ed Hockenbery and Dave Jasinsky.
Harbage, a 1969 graduate, was a four-year letterwinner and captain of the 1969 track team. He’s held the school pole vault record since 1969, when he vaulted to a height of 13-07.25. That year he finished first in the regional and third in the state. He was also on the 1969 Metro Basketball Championship. He’s a Capital University graduate, where he was a member of the track team.
Hockenbery, a 1957 graduate, was three-sport standout in his time at West Jefferson High School. He was an offensive tackle and a standout defensive player on the football team, earning all-league honors in both his junior and senior years. He was voted the team most valuable player and selected to the all-district team. He was also the top scorer and rebounder on the school’s basketball team, and infielder on the baseball team that was Madison County champion his senior year.
Jasinsky, a member of the 1971 graduating class, was the quarterback of the 1969 and 1970 Metro League Championship teams. The 1969 team was undefeated. Jasinsky was all-league in both his junior and senior years and was the leading passer in the Metro. He scored the winning touchdown against Hamilton Township on a 55-yard run to win the league and keep the team’s undefeated record.
