If you can’t get out of the house or away from your job on a Friday night this fall, don’t fret, you can still catch some high school football.
London radio station 105.1 WCYC Ready FM “The Voice of Madison County” recently released its high school football schedule and county football fans will have at least one game to follow all 10 weeks of the regular season.
Ready FM general manager Rick Hartman is excited about once again providing coverage of Madison County high school football, which will have a Mid-State League flair, the conference which London, Madison-Plains and West Jefferson high school’s are all a part of. Jonathan Alder, the county’s northern-most school will also make a rare appearance on the Ready FM airwaves this year.
The season will open Friday, Aug. 29, when West Jefferson plays host to neighboring rival Mechanicsburg. Hartman said it was only fitting to cover this game in Week 1.
“We had to start with Mechanicsburg and West Jeff because it’s two regional champions going against each other,” he said. “We ended last year covering West Jeff in the playoffs and we’ll start the season covering them.”
The Week 2 clash between visiting county school Jonathan Alder at county foe West Jefferson will be the first of four games on Ready FM that will pit county schools against one another. For scheduling purposes the station has concentrated on covering the county schools that compete in the MSL, but getting a chance to cover Alder is something Hartman is looking forward to.
“We’re trying to cover the Mid-State league teams and Jonathan Alder happens to be playing West Jeff which is a big rivalry and they haven’t played in a few years,” Hartman said. “We’re doing all of the county games crossover games and that should be a good one.”
In Week 3 fans will get a chance to listen to new London coach Kyle Cutler go against the squad he was most recently coaching, Bishop Ready. The Silver Knights will head to London and you can bet the Red Raiders will be ready to battle.
“Bishop Ready, that’s where coach Cutler comes from and we wanted to get London in there against them,” Hartman said.
Madison-Plains will travel to West Jefferson for another clash between county rivals. The new-look Golden Eagles believe they have the pieces necessary to contend for a league title, but in order to do so they’ll have to go through the defending league champion Roughriders.
A week later Plains will turn around and host its biggest rival London. A year ago a last minute Red Raiders score gave them a thrilling 28-25 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Week 6 will provide listeners a rare doubleheader. West Jefferson will host Bexley on Thursday, Oct. 2 in a match-up of 2013 state playoff qualifiers. A day later Madison-Plains will play host to Grove City Christian.
London will host Whitehall in Week 8, Ready FM will cover its only regular season game outside of Madison County when Plains goes to Grandview in Week 9 and the regular season finale will come on Halloween night when West Jeff plays at London.
Another subtle change in the schedule this year is that all MSL teams will have their games start at 7 p.m., a half hour earlier than in years past. Ready FM’s pre-game coverage will be at 6:30 p.m.
“They’re all 7 o’clock starts, which is something a lot of teams are going to. All of our games will start at the same time this year, last year we had a game that started at 7 p.m. and a lot of people didn’t know that before hand,” Hartman said.
