Alder boys and girls win pre-holiday games

It wasn’t exactly a banner weekend before the holiday’s for most of the Madison County basketball teams.
No, the squads didn’t get caught in horrible lines at area stores or couldn’t find that elusive gift for a loved one. Most of the teams did however find themselves on the losing end of their final games before the arrival of Christmas.
The Red Raiders (3-4, 1-3) furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short in a home tilt with the visiting Lions on Saturday, Dec. 21.
London trailed 54-43 heading into the final stanza and made a valiant effort before falling in this Mid-State League Ohio Division contest.
Coach Darren Long’s team got the balance he has been looking for as four players scored in double figures, led by senior Zac Carey’s 23-point effort. Dylan Miller and Zach Anderson both finished with 11 points and Brok Bennett tallied 10.
The Golden Eagles (1-4, 0-2) were outscored 43-28 in the middle quarters of their clash at Worthington Christian on Saturday, Dec. 21, and couldn’t make up the difference in the other two periods as they fell in MSL Ohio Division play.
Hunter Butin again led the way with a 19-point night. Eli Williams added 14 and Dylan Voltz finished with nine.
The loss came one night after a disappointing 72-27 defeat at the hands of Unioto.
West Jefferson 54
The Rams of Whitehall might be the most complete team in the MSL Ohio and they were able to hold off the host Roughriders on Saturday, Dec. 21.
West Jefferson had three players score in double figures with Matt Jones (21), Nick Mendenhall (15) and Ross Brenneman (10) leading the way.
Jonathan Alder 44,
The Pioneers (1-3, 1-3) bucked the county trend as they traveled to Elgin and returned with a 44-36 victory on Saturday, Dec. 21.
It was the first win on the year for Alder which had lost three hard-fought Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference games to start the season.
Freshman forward Trey Pugh put together a strong all-around game scoring 13 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists.
Point guard Declan Thomas had five points and five assists, while Hayden Hess scored six points and recorded six steals. Jon Peters scored eight points and Andrew Koenig chipped in seven points of his own.
Grove City 81,
A night after a tough loss to rival Madison-Plains, the Lady Red Raiders (1-6, 0-3) were unable to keep up with a bigger, deeper collection of Greyhounds on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The visiting Raiders were outscored 26-8 in the first quarter and led 46-20 at the half.
Mackenzie Minner showed off her abilities in scoring 17 points. Megan Cox finished with seven in the loss.
East Knox 32
The Golden Eagles (4-3, 2-2) continued to impress, doing so in a non-league home win over the visiting Astros of East Clinton on Saturday, Dec. 21.
Plains built a 37-9 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Macy McCollister (17), Hailey Mayabb (12) and Hayley Faulkner (eight) were the offensive heroes for the Eagles.
West Jefferson 44
The Roughriders (4-2, 3-1) were upended by host Columbus Academy 47-44 on Friday, Dec. 20, knocking West Jefferson out of sole possession of first place in the MSL Ohio.
Josie Hume scored 12 points for the Roughriders, while Claire Sterling added seven. West Jeff had a four-point fourth quarter lead but couldn’t hold it.
Jonathan Alder 65,
River Valley 35
The Pioneers (3-6, 1-3) picked up their first MOAC victory of the season with a 30-point triumph over host River Valley on Friday, Dec. 20.
