A show of diverse talents
By Diana Shaw
This month at the Gallery on High there is a very unusual art show by a father and son I have known for years. I have watched Jim Keen work his magic with cut glass and lead turning them into beautiful works of art which capture light and fill a room with color. From windows to lampshades and freestanding stained glass art works, Jim has made a definite mark on this artist’s life.
A few year back, Jim also started to paint in oils and has created beautiful farm scenes and even our London courthouse clock. Jim has always enjoyed creating art and he has taught several classes at Studio 7 on creating with stained glass. His individual talent does not stop there. He has also taken many beautiful photos along the bike path. In fact, I did a painting of him and Bob Rea riding on the bike path together. He and his wife, Ruth, are enjoying a very active retirement and participate in many community functions.
Tom, Jim’s son, started turning wood a few years ago and has had his work shown in galleries and businesses in the Dayton area. Tom just doesn’t turn wood but takes a great deal of time finding and preparing his material to create very unusual works of art which show off the special qualities of that wood. A piece of wood or a fallen tree are quite different when shaped and polished in the hands of a fine craftsman who has an eye for making nature even more beautiful than it was.
I would have to say that there is a lot of artistic talent between this father and son in both two dimensional and three dimensional art. To miss this show is to miss a beautiful visual experience, so don’t. I highly recommend this February show at the Gallery.
The Gallery on High is located at 5 E. High St., London, which is on the block between the courthouse and McDonald’s. The hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. I hope to see you at the Gallery.
