Joint efforts result in drug arrests

A cooperative investigation between the Shawnee State University Department of Public Safety, Portsmouth City Police Department, and Southern Ohio Drug Task Force resulted in the arrest of two suspects late Wednesday.
The suspects, Akia Brown, 33, and Lennon Brown, 30, both residents of 1727 Offnere St., have been charged with felony-one offenses trafficking in drugs – containing cocaine and possession of drugs – cocaine; as well as felony-five charges of possessing criminal tools.
Around 8:43 p.m. Wednesday, the SSU Department of Public Safety reportedly executed a search warrant at 1727 Offnere St. in Portsmouth, in search of stolen property, weapons, drugs, or any other type of illegal activity, as part of an investigation into a number of thefts on campus.
Director of Public Safety David Thoroughman said, in cooperation with Portsmouth Police and the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force, officers recovered property confirmed to be owned by victims of theft on campus. During the search, officers said they also discovered approximately 72 grams of cocaine, one ounce of marijuana, cash, and digital scales. The discovered cocaine has a street value estimated at $7,200.
Additional charges will be presented to the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office. The matter is under an ongoing investigation.
