The annual Winners Circle premium sale and auction Saturday netted almost $31,000 for more than 30 Madison County Junior Fair champions.
Top auction honors went to Aiden Wilhelmy. The Grand Champion Swine — at 240 pounds — sold for $2,400 and purchased by Bluebird Retirement, Reeves Family Midwest Electric Sales, Long Mechanical, Joe and Anna Henry, Madison County Showpigs, McDonald and Sons Feeds, Hughes Boys Show Pigs and Downing Lawncare.
Kosta Xenikas, Grand Showman of Showmen, Reserve Champion Market Steer and Premier Beef Market Exhibitor, received $2,300 for his steer, bought by the Coughlin Automotive Group and GC Squared LLC.
For several hours Saturday afternoon the young people in the Winners Circle and the Junior Fair Livestock auction at the Madison County Fair stood front and center before the buyers as the auctioneers took their bids.
Turkey Reserve Champion Cody Forrest was the last to enter the Winners Circle. His turkey sold for $400 to Allstate Exteriors.
“This is my eighth year showing at the fair,” he said. He is a member of Town and Country Kids 4-H Club and lives in West Jefferson.
“I was nervous. I am always nervous,” he said when asked about taking part in the auction. And the price? “I was actually expecting a little lower than that. It was high, I thought.”
He said he is donating 10 percent of the auction money to Food For the Poor, and the rest he will save. He also has raised goats, rabbits and chickens. He is the son of Amy and Tim Forrest, and Amy stood nearby, saying they were very proud of him. “He got Reserve Grand Champion last year, too,” she said.
After the auction ended, Ashleigh Armentrout said she was happy with the sale price. “I try not to expect too much. But I was happy.”
She was Single Fry Grand Champion for the third year in a row, and sold for $500 to Longs Plumbing and Heating. “I also got $500 for my cheese tray,” she added. When asked if she was nervous before the sale started, she was quick to say, “Nope.”
Jason Baker, a member of the Junior Fair Sales Committee was asked what kind of work has gone into preparing for this sale. “Tons of work. Everything from putting the sales packet together, to getting the kids lined up, to setting up — we did all this after the Showman of Showmen Friday night. We had people working here until 3-4 in the morning getting ready.”
Why do they do all this work?
“It is the gratitude to know that the kids did a great job for the fair during the year. I have two kids doing sheep and ducks, most of us have kids in 4-H and FFA, and it is the happiness that comes with helping the kids,” Baker said.
He said he is very proud of his kids who were showing Saturday.
This is his first year on the committee, and said there were “no surprises. Just go with the flow knowing you are working with a great group of people. It has been very good at the fair, despite the rain.”
