This week, I needed to buy a new string trimmer for the yard work around our home. I looked at several brands and finally made my decision based on the warranty of the product. It literally came down to how long the trimmer was guaranteed.
One company guaranteed their trimmer for three years. Not bad! But the other company made this promise: “You can trust our no-haggle five year guarantee!” The fine print said if anything went wrong during the five-year warranty period, I could exchange it for a new one, no questions asked. That is a pretty strong guarantee in my book, so I bought their product. So far, so good. I love their product and hope to have five years (or more) of good service from it! A guarantee is only as good as the company behind it. In this case, the company has been around for a long time, so I trust them to be there if I need them.
Which got me to thinking about the “guarantees” in the spiritual world of things. Many people are fully expecting to spend their eternity in Heaven when they leave this world. The Bible teaches there is only one way to go to Heaven and that is by accepting the free gift of eternal life provided by Jesus Christ and His death on the cross. Not that everyone is going to Heaven because He died, but that if you accept Him as your Savior and receive the free gift of eternal life, you are “guaranteed” eternity in Heaven. The same is true for hell. Refuse to accept Jesus and His gift of salvation, and you are guaranteed to spend your eternity in hell. Those are two guarantees made by God. Is He to be trusted? Is His Word valid and reputable?
Let’s look at it like this: Suppose you live your life, refuse to accept Jesus as your Savior, die and find out there is a Heaven and there is a hell. What have you lost? Eternity in Heaven. That’s huge! Now suppose you trust God, accept Jesus as your Savior, die and find out there is no Heaven and there is no hell. What have you lost? Nothing! You have lived a good life and you have not lost anything! But if there is a Heaven and a hell (and there is!) you are going to be able to enjoy being in Heaven with God for all of eternity! Which one would you rather have?
Jesus teaches us in I. Thessalonians 4:13-18 that He is coming again and those who are in Christ (the saved) will be taken up to Heaven to live with Him. Read it for yourself. And know that that is a guarantee you can believe in! Why? Because it is “backed up” by the one true, and living God!
And that is Something To Think About for this week.
