Deliciously big donuts and clever cut-out cookies are leaving London — at least temporarily.

Schuler’s Bakery, located at 289 Lafayette St., will close on Sunday, June 22, as company officials search to relocate, according to company president Mike Peters.

Peters said he isn’t sure the branch bakery’s new home will be in London. However, he’s pleased with the community’s response to the Springfield-based goodie shop.

Peters’ five-year lease on the Lafayette Street location will expire next week at the end of the month. He said he mailed a proposed counter agreement to owner Al Coughlin Jr., of Coughlin London Properties LTD, in January.

“I never received a response,” Peters said.

When contacted Wednesday by The Press, Coughlin said he never received the letter.

“I just got a message that he (Peters) wasn’t going to renew,” Coughlin said. “I will call him right now.”

Peters said his company is leaving the strip-mall site in good condition.

“Better than when we first rented it,” he added.

Schuler’s Bakery, based in Springfield, opened the London store at the Lafayette Street location in August 2009.

At the time of its opening, the London store was Schuler’s third and the prototype store for future growth. Peters explained in 2009 that unlike major chains such as Starbuck’s and Dunkin’ Donuts, Schuler’s is looking to grow at a rate of one store per year.

Specialities of the house include chocolate cream-filled donuts, cookies and signature cakes. Goods are baked overnight (9 p.m to 4 a.m. at the Main Street bakery in Springfield), loaded, and delivered fresh to a store by no later than five the same morning.

The bakery currently has five locations. Other than London, properties include one in Urbana and multiple in Springfield. The bakery recently launched its own line of coffee at its Limestone Street location in Springfield.

Schuler’s has been in business since 1937.
