Madison-Plains High School officials are planning to meet June 30 to hire a new principal, following news that Principal Chris Clark is leaving his home-away-from-home to return to his alma mater.

As previously reported, Clark, who has served as the district’s principal for the past nine years and as a Vo-Ag teacher for 17 years, will assume the superintendency of Black River Schools in Medina County on July 1. He graduated from Black River High in 1984.

“Madison-Plains’ loss is Black River’s gain,” Board President Kelly Cooley said. “We are sorry to see Chris go after so many years with the district, but it comes as no surprise given his strong leadership skills.”

Board members previously scheduled the June 30 special meeting to discuss finding a replacement for Superintendent Bernie Hall, who will step down Aug. 1 after serving at the helm for a second time beginning in 2007. Hall was also superintendent from 1997 to 2000.

Clark, who graduated from Black River in 1984, began his tenure in Madison-Plains in 1988. He received both his bachelor and master’s degrees in agriculture from The Ohio State University and studied education administration at the University of Dayton and Ashland University.

Clark said he was taking a pay cut to go back to his home district. It will pay him $95,000 to be superintendent. Tim Detwiller, treasurer of Madison-Plains Local Schools, reported Clark’s salary for the last year was $104,700.

“We have some important decisions to make,” Cooley said. “The superintendent and high school principal need to work in lock-step on behalf of the students in the district as we move toward meeting the state’s new learning expectations and standards.”

“They will have the opportunity to set a new stage for the district and raise the academic bar,” she said.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. in the Central Office Meeting Room next Monday.
