One could say the Relay for Life team from Madison Correctional Institution is “driven.”

Angela Artis has the support of a unit of MaCI inmates by virtue of their art. They have painted four paintings, all with the theme of the Disney Pixar movie “Cars.”

She will also have larger sized “cars” of the same theme. Any one of them will be carried by a team member throughout the Relay for Life Friday evening at London High School. Their overall them is “CRAZY 4 THE CURE.”

Artis said she is a part of Lynn Allen’s team. Both women have had relatives afflicted by cancer. Some are in remission, others have perished from the disease’s complications. Artis became actively involved four years ago.

The painted panels, with various Pixar Disney characters thereon, will provide the backdrop for their tent at the relay. The cars can be carried by children who participate in the event.

MaCI spokesman Tim Brunsman said five inmates picked up brushes to paint the art as a part of their community service.

“It keeps them busy and gives them self worth and smile about it,” Brunsman said. “When they get out we hope they continue to do that.”

The event begins at 3 p.m. today and will run through noon on Saturday.

Artis said once the event has ended, they plan to offer the cardboard cars to Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a donation for their young patients.
