Eleven days after his release from prison, Corey Rice was back behind bars for allegedly dealing drugs.

The 29-year-old London man was arrested on Sunday, May 25, after a search by officers of the Madison County Drug Task Force turned up .75 ounces of crack cocaine in the 245 Washington Ave. home where Rice was staying.

He was charged with second-degree felony drug trafficking and jailed at Tri-County under $20,000 bond. Rice posted that bond on June 3 and was released on house arrest.

He waived a preliminary hearing in municipal court on May 30. Rice’s case is expected to come before the county grand jury in coming weeks, assistant prosecutor Nick Adkins said.

Rice is familiar to both task force officers and the county court system. He was convicted in 2012 of trafficking drugs and spent two years in prison. He was released on May 12.

Citizen complaints about alleged drug deals immediately put Rice on task force radar, according to Lt. Eric Semler of the sheriff’s office.

Rice was under surveillance about 11 a.m. on May 23 when he was allegedly involved in a crack cocaine transaction on Stewart Avenue in the city. Officers stopped a 2004 Ford van driven by Rice and found a bag of suspected crack cocaine in the van’s console and another on the rear floor board. They also found $650 in cash.

Based on that discovery, they searched Rice’s Washington Avenue home and found a third bag of suspected crack cocaine — along with scales and a box of sandwich bags — in a hallway closet.

Rice admitted all the illegal drug belonged to him.

Semler estimated street value of the cocaine (in the London area) at $2,100.

While heroin continues to dominate the local market in illegal drugs, cocaine is reappearing as a substance of “choice.” Some abusers use both drugs, Semler said.
