Columbus police believe Burns was shot during robbery at his residence

A former Hillsboro man is dead after being shot Thursday afternoon in Columbus during what police suspect was a robbery, according to reports.

Thomas K. Burns, 52, died at Mount Carmel West Hospital, according to an NBC4 report, after being shot in the upper body.

Police responded to an address on the west side of Columbus on the report of a shooting shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and discovered Burns, who was then transported to the hospital in critical condition.

According to a Columbus Dispatch report, Burns was found outside his apartment beside his vehicle, but police think he was shot inside his residence.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from a robbery and that the suspect fled before the arrival of law enforcement.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Rhoads-Edgington Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
