Absentee voting for May 6 primary election began April 1

Since absentee voting kicked off on Tuesday, April 1, the Madison County Board of Elections office has sent out 224 ballots.


The 224 number represents “absentee ballots, nursing homes, and people that have come in the office to vote,” said Tim Ward, director at the Madison County Board of Elections.


This year’s primary in Ohio features a number of statewide races and a statewide ballot issue. In Madison County, just one county-wide race will be contested.


The Madison County Probate Juvenile Court Judge position will be up for grabs, with Judge Glenn Hamilton not seeking re-election. Richard A. Dunkle and Christopher J. Brown are both seeking the position.


Eamon Costello, who was appointed Common Pleas judge last fall, will run unchallenged on the May ballot.


County auditor Jennifer Hunter will seek re-election with no challenger at the primary.


Along with the candidates up for re-election, there will also be four local issues on the May ballot.


• Two county school districts will put income tax levies on the ballot to cover current expenses: Jefferson Local School District’s levy is a 1 percent, five-year tax levy; Jonathan Alder local Schools has a 1/2 percent, seven-year tax levy on the ballot.


• Madison-Plains will seek to renew their 8-mill tax levy, which covers current expenses.


• Mechanicsburg Exempted Village School District will be asking for a 1.96-mill tax levy renewal.


Secretary of State Jon Husted announced this week that in the first week of early voting statewide, county boards of elections reported that 6,274 Ohioans have already voted absentee and 61,508 ballots have been requested. Absentee voting for military and overseas voters began on Saturday, March 22.


Starting April 1, boards began mailing out absentee ballots to those who had requested them. Voters must complete, sign and seal their voted ballots, taking care to provide the required information, including proper identification. Voted ballots must be postmarked the day before Election Day and received no later than the 10th day after the election (May 16).


Absentee ballots may also be delivered in person to boards of elections no later than the close of polls on Election Day. They may not be returned at polling locations.


Voters wanting to cast an absentee ballot by mail have until Saturday, May 3 at noon to request an absentee ballot by contacting their county board of elections for more information or by downloading an absentee ballot request form at MyOhioVote.com.


Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. Voters choosing to head to the polls on Election Day need to remember to bring the proper form of ID and know their polling place and precinct. Voters can check their polling place and precinct and get other important voting information by visiting www.MyOhioVote.com.
