Local youths bound for Buckeye Boys & Girls State

Each year The American Legion and The American Legion Auxiliary sponsor Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State respectively. These are fast paced programs of mock government at the state, county and city levels. The main objectives of the programs is to train young men and women, who have completed their junior year in senior high school, in the duties, rights and privileges of citizenship by providing the attendee the opportunity to actively participate in a democratic form of government.

The training is objective, practical and non-partisan. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies and recreation.

Buckeye Boys State will be held Sunday, June 11 through Sunday, June 18 on the campus of Miami University in Oxford.

Buckeye Girls State will be held at the University of Mount Union beginning Sunday, June 11 and concludes on Saturday, June 17.

The Plain City American Legion Post No. 248 has selected Ryan Gutierrez and Grayson Abend as candidates for this year’s Buckeye Boys State.

Ryan is the son of Lucas and Jolinda Gutierrez of Plain City. He is active in school activities as a member of the Jonathan Alder High School Marching Band. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Alder Soccer Team. He is also an Eagle Scout.

Grayson’s parents are Melinda Donnelly and Chad Abend. He is active in Student Government, a member of the National Honor Society, the Alder Soccer Team and the Alder Marching Band.

Attending Buckeye Girls State is Madison McMillen and Madison Vance. Madison is the daughter of Bill and DiAnn McMillen.

She is very active in both the community and school activities. Madison McMillen is President of the Darby Springs South 4-H Club and serves as a Union County 4-H Club Counselor, she is a member of the Union County Junior Fair Board and a member of the Bell Choir at the Mechanicsburg United Methodist Church. At school Madison is the Junior Class Secretary, performed in fall plays and the spring musical. She is a squad leader in the Alder Marching Band, a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honorary, the girl’s golf team, Quick Recall Team, the Spanish Club and the Math Club.

Madison Vance is the daughter of Rich and Tonya Vance. She will be a senior at Jonathan Alder High School this fall. She is a member of the Alder Majorette Squad, concert band and on the Varsity Tennis Team. She traveled abroad during her freshman year, visiting seven countries in 21 days, representing People to People International. She will be attending Columbus State College as a high school senior. She is currently reviewing college offerings and will major in business with a minor in marketing.
