A Spokane, Washington girl who was reported missing was found safe Wednesday in Madison County
The 16-year-old girl was found in a car with Zachary Wayne Jones, a 30-year-old man from Virginia. The pair reportedly met online.
Jones has been charged with kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and grand theft, according to the Tri-County Regional Jail’s website.
An Amber Alert had been issued for the girl, who reportedly ran away Sunday to live with the older man.
The two were reportedly sleeping in Jones’ car — parked off Interstate 70 at a rest stop near the Clark County line — when they were spotted by an Ohio State trooper doing a routine check of the area.
When found the two were said to be cooperating with police.
The girl is reportedly developmentally disabled and has the mental capacity of an 11-year-old.
“The child’s grandmother advised she left on foot but her cell phone tracked her possibly in a vehicle. She left evidence that she left willingly, however, functions at a diminished capacity and unable to make realistic life choices,” according to the Amber Alert issued by Spokane Police.
Jones is currently being held in the jail while awaiting extradition to Washington, where he will face the charges.
