Madison County residents who cannot afford an attorney to deal with their legal issues will have an opportunity to gain some free knowledge next week.
The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) and the Madison County Bar Association will hold a free clinic at London Public Library on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
The event is exclusively for Madison County residents.
“We’re excited to be able to offer this,” said Stuart Itani, managing attorney of domestic and family law for LASC.
LASC is a nonprofit that serves the central Ohio area, including Madison County. The organization handles civil cases, such as debt, eviction, domestic and healthcare issues.
Though is no registration required, those seeking advice will be asked to fill out an intake form with basic financial information.
Itani said the Madison County Bar Association will lend attorneys to the event to talk with locals in need of advice.
Bar association president Lauren Kimmel, who also serves as the common pleas court magistrate, said these events are always helpful for those that are in need of advice, but lack funds.
“It’s a great idea every time they have these things,” Kimmel said.
Because of her position with the court, Kimmel is not involved in the LASC event, but said she is often contacted with legal questions that she cannot answer. She normally refers those calls to LASC.
Tuesday’s event will make people in the county more aware of LASC and give them the opportunity for free legal advice, Itani said.
“It’s a really new service opportunity,” he added.
